Ulysses is a Friesian gelding who will turn 2 years old in July 2024. He cross ties and is well behaved for the farrier and loves our walks in the woods. Unfortunately, Ulysses was dealt a bad hand and has been diagnosed with Pyloric Stenosis/gastric outflow obstruction. In English, Pyloric Stenosis is a narrowing of the pylorus, the opening from the stomach into the small intestine. His opening is only 25% of the size it should be, increasing the risk for food to get blocked in that section. Because of this, Ulysses is on a very strict diet for the rest of his life. This diet involves being fed wet grain and chopped forage 4 times throughout day and he will not be able to tolerate long stem hay for the rest of his life. He will need to be separated from other horses during all four meal times and will not be able to have access to hay. Due to his special needs, having his own box stall to come into during his four feedings, and at night would probably be the most practical way to manage his feedings. In addition to breakfast and dinner, he does need lunch and an 8pm meal every night to hold him over since he can’t have any hay. Ulysses can tolerate eating grass in the spring, summer and fall. He is thriving and doing very well with his diet. Ulysses has his whole life ahead of him! He is a stunningly beautiful Friesian, and we would love to see him placed in a home with someone who can continue to give him the daily maintenance he needs throughout his life, as well as the training and job he is fully capable of doing. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us to learn more about Ulysses. We will consider going outside our normal adoption radius to find him the perfect home, but applications inside our radius will take precedence.
