A non-profit horse rescue in Southern Vermont
Ulysses was one of the most critically ill horses rescued during a 2023 law enforcement seizure at a neglectful breeding facility in Vermont. Just a year old at the time, he was so severely neglected and malnourished that he looked far younger than he was.
As many of you know, in 2023 he was diagnosed with Pyloric Stenosis—a condition where the opening between the stomach and small intestine is dangerously narrowed. In his case, it was functioning at just 25% of its normal capacity, putting him at constant risk for life-threatening blockages. Since arriving last year, he’s been on a strict, specialized diet with no long stemmed hay allowed.
In April 2025, Ulysses underwent a routine endoscopic exam to check whether his stomach was emptying properly. To everyone’s surprise, it revealed a dramatic improvement: the opening had widened to 75%! With cautious optimism and close veterinary oversight, we began offering him ¼ flake of hay in a slow-feed net four times a day and gradually increased it. After four weeks on this new feeding regimen, he returned to the hospital again for another scope—and the results were the best we could have hoped for: his stomach was completely empty. This confirms that his pylorus is now allowing hay to pass through successfully! Under continued veterinary supervision, we’re now increasing his hay intake. Over the next two weeks, he’ll be fed from a hay net with larger holes, and if all goes well, we’ll gradually transition him to loose hay. After eating loose hay for a couple of weeks, he will go back to the hospital (end of May) for another scope to make sure he’s tolerating loose hay.
We are eagerly looking for the perfect home for this special gelding. Ulysses will turn three years old in July 2025. He has unlimited potential and we are hoping to find an adopter with many years of experience training young horses to continue his training. He is a Friesian gelding and stands 15 hands tall. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
